Trust – Friends and Friendship

Who can say that he has 1000 friends? Do you have one friend that you can really trust out of the 1000 friends? Whoever has that one good friend and can really trust him, without that trust being used or abused, has found a really good friend to be treasured. It is difficult to find other friends that you also can put your trust in. If you don’t have 1000 friends, how can you find one friend who will stay with you through thick and thin?

Jesus wants to be a good friend to us. With HIM we can be certain that he will not disappoint us.

"A pleasant voice multiplies friends, and a gracious tongue multiplies courtesies. Be in peace with many: nevertheless have but one counsellor of a thousand. When you gain a friend, gain him through testing, and do not trust him hastily. For there is a friend who is such at his own convenience, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble. And there is a friend who changes into an enemy, and will disclose a quarrel to your disgrace. And there is a friend who is a table companion, but will not stand by you in your day of trouble. In prosperity he will make himself your equal, and be bold with your servants; but if you are brought low he will turn against you, and will hide himself from your presence. Keep yourself far from your enemies, and be on guard toward your friends. A faithful friend is a strong defence: he that has found one has found a treasure. There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend, a faithful friend is a medicine of life; and those who fear the Lord will find him. Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright, for as he is, so is his neighbour also."
(from Wisdom of Jesus, Son of Sirach, chapter 6:5-17)

A faithful friend is a strong defence

Questions to think about:
- How many friends do you have?
- How many friends can you really totally (100%) trust? (99%, 50%, 10%, none?)
- How many friends would stand by you in distress without laughing at you?
- Has it happened to you that your “so called” friend abandoned you when you needed him?
- How would you seek out new friends? (Appearance? Money? Clothes? Prestige? Character? Or?)
- What does friendship mean to you?
- Are you a reliable friend?
